[Psy2] Technical FAQ and Known Issues

Hello, everyone! If you are affected by a less-than-fine problem, glitch, crash, or other defect, please check out this here FAQ before posting. Many users are affected by the same problems that have potential solutions or workarounds, which is what this FAQ is all about. If you have read this FAQ and still can’t find an answer for your problem, do a quick search for other threads on the topic here. If that fails, too, then please post a new thread on the problem or email us at support@doublefine.com!

We'll think you're the coolest if you provide us with the following when you contact us:

  • A description of the issue.

  • Save file in which the issue still occurs, located in:

    • Steam and DRM-free: %localappdata%\Psychonauts2\Saved

    • Your DxDiag log. We require the full report documents so that we can check driver dates.

Psychonauts 2 on PC is doing something strange and random and glitchy and none of the specific things below help, what can I do?

Computers are fickle beasts and sometimes things go wrong. There are a few steps you can try that solve many of the random breakages that users encounter. If you post about an issue, very likely we’ll ask you to try one or more of these things first.

  • Make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements.

 Windows Minimum:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

  • OS: Windows 7 (64 bit)

  • Processor: Intel Core i3-3225, AMD Phenom II X6 1100T

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM

  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050, AMD Radeon RX 560

  • DirectX: Version 11

  • Storage: 30 GB available space

  • Additional Notes: 2 GB video memory

Windows Recommended:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

  • OS: Windows 10 (64 bit)

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-7700K, Ryzen 5 1600

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM

  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, AMD Radeon RX 580

  • DirectX: Version 12

  • Storage: 30 GB available space

  • Additional Notes: 6 GB video memory

Reboot your computer. It’s a simple thing but it’s amazing how many problems this solves.

Update your drivers, especially video card drivers.

In Steam, verify the Integrity of your Local Game Cache. You can do this by Right clicking on Psychonauts 2 in your library, choosing Properties, Advanced, and then clicking the Verify Integrity of Local Game Cache button.

Remove and reinstall the game.

Try deactivating heavy background processes like anti-virus or malware scanners. On some computers these programs are so demanding that they significantly interfere with games. If this doesn’t solve your problem, though, be sure to turn your scanners back on!

You can also try to play in windowed mode and a lower resolution

The goal is to find out where exactly the game is falling over, which will hopefully give us a clue to what the problem is.

My game crashes on PC with a strange graphics error

  • Unfortunately these may be random on certain machines and not controlled by the game. Please send us a message with your DxDiag so we can investigate further.

Does the game support ultra-wide monitors?

  • Yes, Psychonauts 2 has support for ultra-wide monitors in gameplay. Cutscenes will display in 16:9 aspect ratio because that is the aspect ratio for which they were authored.

I can't seem to open a chest, even though I think I have a key for it

  • This can happen if your Psy-wallet is full. Try buying something from Otto and then the chest might be able to open!

Where are my PC save files located?

  • Steam and DRM-free: %localappdata%\Psychonauts2\Saved

Where are my Otto-Shot pictures located?

  • Steam, Xbox Console, and PlayStation 4: Pictures are saved in the system's share folder location.

  • Windows Store and DRM-free: X:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Psychonauts 2\Psychonauts2\Saved

Where do I find certain collectibles?

  • Check the Internal Manual to find maps of all areas of the game with helpful information about collectibles in each area.

  • Some figments can be sneaky and quite well-hidden. If you return to a level after completing it and can't seem to find figments that were located in an area that is now inaccessible, those figments have been relocated to a nearby accessible area. Figments can always be collected after you complete a level.

I’m blocked from progressing past a certain point

  • Please describe the area you cannot progress past and what you might have tried to progress past it to the best of your knowledge. Any additional information you may have, such as what levels you've previously completed, playtime, whether you've recently loaded a checkpoint, or etc. will greatly help us diagnose the issue.

  • If on PC, you can send us your save file to aid in our investigation. See above for the save file location for your PC version.

My save file didn't return to the last place where I saved.

  • The game saves based on specific checkpoints, so while you will return to the nearest checkpoint to where you left off, you may not return to the same position.

If you are receiving a "LowLevelFatalError"

If you are receiving a "LowLevelFatalError" error message, and you meet the game's minimum hardware requirements, then try launching the game in DX11 mode.

On Steam:
Right click Psychonauts 2 in the steam client and enter the Properties menu.
In the general section, enter the text below in the "Launch options"

-DX11

DRM-free build:
Create a shortcut link to Psychonauts 2.
Right click the link, and enter the properties menu
In the "Target:" section, enter "-DX11" at the end. It should look something like this.

...DRMFree\Psychonats2.exe -DX11

Game crashes on startup.

There are also reports that certain programs do not like to play nice with UE4. One such program is "Sonic Studios 3" which comes packaged with some ASUS products. Try temporarily uninstalling the program to see if it helps.
